How to Combat Hypertension with Yoga

One third of adults suffer from hypertension, more commonly referred to as high blood pressure. Hypertension has in fact become a major epidemic as a result of factors such as stress and heredity.

Although conventional drugs are often taken to combat hypertension, natural remedies are also available. These include antioxidants such as passion flower and pomegranate, which are known to have stress relieving properties. In addition, regularly engaging in yoga exercises can be instrumental in the battle against hypertension by helping to return the blood pressure to a normal level.

Since the kidneys are often negatively affected by hypertension, it is important to practice yoga positions that will take the stress off of them while also promoting overall relaxation. The first pose is the wide angle forward bend (Upavistha Konasana). The purpose of this position is to relax the kidneys by placing them in their natural position. This pose requires that you sit with your legs spread wide apart and your toes pointed toward the ceiling. If you are not experienced with this pose, you may want to place a chair between your legs. Slowly reach forward using your hips and relax your arms on the chair. Place your head face down on top of your arms and relax it as well. Breathe in and out as you normally would and hold the pose for a minimum of one minute. If you desire more of a challenge, you can substitute a bolster for a chair and follow the same set of instructions.
