Start Learning Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga is believed by some to be the forerunner of all yoga styles. The name derives from the Sanskrit word “Kunda” or “pot”. This style of yoga focuses primarily on the chakra at the base of the spine, the Muladhara Chakra. It is believed that the energy around that chakra is shaped like a snake coiled around the spine three and a half times, and each of the three coils (or Gunas) is given a name: Sattva, Tamas, Rajas, and Vikritis for the half coil.
Kundalini refers to a region on the lower body which for males resides between the anus and testicles, while for women is located between the vagina and clitoris.
Although the energy differs between males and females, Kundalini yoga symbolises equality and power for both genders. The female energy is given the name Sakti, while the male energy is represented by the word Siva. When these two energies unite they form the raw element of all energy. Contrary to what you might expect, given that the Kundalini region is near the genitals, these energies do not unite from there. They are united in our brains, where all of our emotions stem from, such as love, friendship, and energy. One of the main goals behind Kundalini yoga is to eliminate the negative emotions that come from our brain, such as jealousy, hatred, depression, and grief.
This form of yoga was first introduced by Yogi Bhajan in 1969. It includes meditation, focused breathing techniques, mantras, and the typical yoga asanas. Contrary to its name, however, Kundalini yoga does not focus only on the Kundalini poses, but incorporates a strong emphasis on breathing and chanting. It is most rewarding to those who can maintain their awareness to the point of a full spritual transformation. When this is achieved, it is said that the energy produces a hissing noise, reminiscent of the serpent-like coil around the base of the spine. the energy then moves from the Muladhara Chakra up to the Brahma Nadi, and finally to the Sahasrara Chakra.
Kundalini Yoga’s emphasis on the spinal cord attempts to focus on the nervous system through our spine’s connection to it. it is believed that the nervous system is the main control center for our bodies, responsible even for things such as our memories, thoughts, intellects, and even our ability to imagine. The nervous system itself consists of our brain and all of our nerves, most importantly the spinal cord. Because of how delicate the tissues that make up our spines are, they require diligent and accurate care. Kundalini yoga focuses on giving our spines the attention and care that they need.
